Rigging a Hobie Revolution with a Furl System

Engineering A Furl System (Part One)

Just wanted to share briefly the first steps I've made in preparing my Hobie Revolution for sailing and especially for fishing while under sail. I think I have read every post made on forums on the Internet on how to rig a Revo for sailing. I have talked to a few Adventure Island owners who have shared with me their understanding of the furl system and have studied the engineering that Hobie has put into the AI furl system. Kate at P & P Kayaks here in Kona has also been a tremendous wealth of knowledge and I want to thank everyone who made the effort to share with me their thoughts on creating a furl system.

When you look at the pictures in this article, I might have over thought this one out, but the reason for my design is based on the limited space available when dealing with the sailing mast, mast mount and front hatch on the Revo. A perfect design is the AI and my design works in concept to the AI. I also wanted an easy tear down of the furl system so that I can go back to my standard way of fishing if I choose to do so with my ram mount balls and rod holders. Secondly, keeping it out of the mirage drive pedal system was as important to my design. It might be overkill, but I am sure it will work. You will be able to see a step-by-step process of how I engineered the furl system in the members section in the next coming weeks with a parts list and video of how it works. I still need to add the cleats and blocks to the main sheet once my order arrives. So there will be a "Step Two" to this article coming shortly.

I'm real excited to learning how to sail because I have never done it before and this will add a new dimension to kayak fishing. I'm a big fan of Josh Holmes of YakAss.net who sails and fishes from his AI and I have learned a lot from following his website. Sailing has new terminology in words and sometimes when I am talking to a sailor, I have no clue what they are saying! And the best thing about kayak sailing, it's going to make kayak fishing even better because it will give me another avenue to escape. It's like listening to the Christopher Cross song, "Sailing" and just letting go of the pressures of having to catch a fish, making new videos for YakHawaii, writing new articles to keep this site fresh and so forth. I really put the pressure on me this time after making the YakHawaii website. But it goes along with the territory and it's still fun. I really look forward to sharing what I've learned and really... this is what YakHawaii is all about! So here are the first few shots of my Hobie Revolution furl system with more to follow in the next couple of weeks. Enjoy!

Makahiki Day 2 & 3 Update

YakHawaii Scores a BIG Zero for Two Days of Fishing in the Aquahunters 25 Day Competition

Just wanted to give an update on my performance in 2010 Aquahunters Makahiki. The caption explains it all as I was not able to boat a fish. No excuses and I wish I had something to write about and a new video to post, but I really do not want to write about "the one that got away." And since I've been so involved in the redevelopment and security of the YakHawaii website, my focus has not been in writing new articles. Maybe when I get out next week, I will have some new news about my fishing... almost embarrassing, but that's why they call it fishing.

For those new readers who have just stumbled across the YakHawaii website or just joined as members, the Makahiki competition is a 25 day event put on by aquahunters.com, a kayak fishing forum website in Hawaii. It started in February and will end in September covering 25 days of kayak fishing, ones that I carefully choose over this period of time. You are awarded points based on fish categories and at the end of the 8 months, the one who has the most points is the Makahiki winner. So far after 3 days in the event, I have a total of 27 points with only one mahi landed. There have been days that I've fished and landed fish (last 2 videos), but did not claimed them as official fishing days in the Makahiki. So strategy has not been very good on my part. So there's my update...

If you want more information on this event, please visit Aquahunters (www.aquahunters.com). There is still time to enter the competition.

A Book by Jon Shein - Kayak Fishing

Review on the Jon Shein's New Book, "Kayak Fishing"

jons_bookWhen I started in kayak fishing in 2006, I got the bug and wanted to know as much as I could about the sport. I wanted to know what I needed to get started... what kind of kayak I should purchase... how I should outfit my kayak for fishing... safety gear... and the list goes on. There were probably less than 30 people on the Big Island that were kayak fishing at that time that I knew of. Most information on kayak fishing was scarce unless you belonged to a forum. The first kayak I purchased for a $1,000 was a disaster! I wasted so much money on unnecessary gear and tackle. Where was this book?

Well, I just completed Jon Shein's new book titled "Kayak Fishing" from cover to cover (210 pages). I have never met Jon, never really knew anything about him until Maui Mark shared with me that this was a must read book on the sport we love. So I ordered it online at www.kayakfishingbook.net for $29.99 plus shipping. I'm really not the type of person at this stage in kayak fishing to read a general book on kayak fishing unless it has something to do with Hawaii kayak fishing. But I found it to be unbiased and well worth the read. This book alone will save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars before you invest your hard earned money on kayak fishing.

In general, the book covers the topic of kayak fishing thoroughly but it lacks to talk story about kayak fishing in Hawaii. It's focus is on the east coast, southwest and western shores on the mainland covering saltwater to fresh water kayak fishing. But here is the greatest thing about this book... Jon Shein has covered everything you can possibly think of when it comes to kayak fishing. He covers his personal story and involvement with kayak fishing being one of the first to create an online kayak fishing store called KayakFishingStuff. This store outfitted hundreds of kayaks for anglers distributing dozens of named brands like Hobie and Ocean Kayaks. He specialized in rigging kayaks for fishing and has put countless hours on the water! So he knows what he's talking about!

So if you want unbiased information on:

  • Choosing a fishing kayak
  • Accessories and gear
  • Outfitting a kayak
  • Tackle and techniques,
  • Yayak fishing environments,
  • Getting to the water
  • Kayak fishing specifics
  • Kayak care
  • Exotic kayak fishing
  • Kayak fishing tournaments
  • The future of kayak fishing
  • Plus more...

I would recommend reading Jon Shein's book. You can order his book at www.kayakfishingbook.net
