Fish Finder Transducer & Battery Mounting
Mounting the Humminbird Fish Finder Transducer and Battery to your Kayak
Are you installing a Humminbird transducer and battery? Do you want to avoid the "marine goop" or "epoxy" and looking for an alternative way of installation without making holes in your kayak? Well here are a couple of solutions that I use on my Hobie Revolution that have solved my transducer and battery mounting. These methods have been working for 7 months without failure, problems I had previous to following these solutions. The transducer video is provided by CaptDick.net, the online store where I purchased the transducer mounting kit for my Humminbird 343c fishfinder. The installation is pretty much self explanatory. I chose to install it on the flat surface under my seat. If for any reason you run out of grease and need to add more, Humminbird support said that "marine grease" or "axle grease" can be used as a replacement becuase they don't ship additional tubes if you have to remount.

New Website Design and New Additions to YakHawaii
Kayak Fishing Community and Forum Now Included
It's been very windy for kayak fishing on the Big Island. Not saying that I've not tried, but every time that I've launched, I had to turn back around and get off the water for safety reasons. When is the wind going to let up? With little time out on the water, I finally took the time to redesign and update a better website for YakHawaii.
We've now added two important features to our website called the Kayak Fishing Community and Forum. I was hesitant at first to add the Forum because there's another one in Hawaii that's more established and very popular with the local kayak anglers. But by the request of some of our current members that wanted an alternative choice in a forum to discuss Hawaii kayak fishing, we made a choice to make it happen. At this time, only members can access the Forum and eventually we'll roll it out to the public for viewing when we have more dialogue in the threads.
YakHawaii will now have a better voice for communication between all its members and much more than a simple forum. YakHawaii.com will now help you get connected into the local kayak fishing community! You can make fishing buddies, join and create kayak fishing groups, share your fishing photos and videos and show off the fish you catch from your kayak. You will learn new tips and tricks and even find the best fishing spots on the Hawaiian waters.
If you're a current member of YakHawaii, we encourage you to update your profile and upload your avatar image by logging onto the Kayak Fishing Community link. The best settings for the avatar images are 160 pixels by 160 pixels. If you have any kayak fishing buddies that have not visited our website, please invite them to join and get connected and have them join your own fishing group. We are the first to offer this valuable tool in Hawaii for your kayak fishing experiences. We are also looking for those who would love to contribute their stories of your kayak fishing experiences by becoming a writer of YakHawaii.com. It's easy to submit an article, just let us know that you want permission granted to become an author by filling out the contact form or sending me an email.
Remember that this site is designed for you... our members of YakHawaii. And if you want to see other features added to this website, please let us know and we'll consider adding them. Aloha and tight lines!

Re:New Website Design and New Additions to YakHawa
Apr 04 2010 02:06:53 Just want to say thanks for putting up with the rapid changes to the site. A tweak here and there. If you are having any issues with things not working on your browser (IE, Safari, Firefox, etc.) Let me know. I had to take the daily moon phase off as it was causing menu problems in Internet Explorer 6. Will try to figure this one out. Maybe I need to update to IE8... Let me know if the drop down menus are working and if you have any other suggestions. Will be fishing Monday or Tuesday and hopefully will have some new videos to post! If you have a kayak fishing web link you want to add to the site, let us know or log in and use the "user menu" to add it. Don't forget to add your avatars! Thanks...Paul

Apr 08 2010 07:26:38 Thanks for joining. I really enjoy AH and the members of that forum. What will be interesting here is that the forum will be article driven. So if you want to share, let me know and can arrange author settings. Just shoot me an email. I enjoy your threads on AH and your valued contribution to helping those who want to kayak fish. This site is about sharing and not holding back, but in a respectful way of doing it... that's why I made this site a little more than a forum. Enjoy!

Re:New Website Design and New Additions to YakHawa
Apr 11 2010 00:54:59 If you want to attach photos to the forum, they must be resized to no more than 640 pixels wide and 640 pixels in height. File size must not exceed 300 kilobytes. FYI as I am trying to keep bandwidth down on attachments as the files will accumulate in the future.

Re:New Website Design and New Additions to YakHawa
Apr 16 2010 01:51:32 The forum software does not allow multiple attachments at once. So to attach additional images to a post, you choose an image or file with browse, you don't need to hit the button [img] or [file]. Then you press the "submit" button and the image will be added... you must edit the post and re-do the process... then you can upload a new image or file.

May 28 2010 23:47:29 Paul, Pueo here from AH. I really like the direction your site is taking. I've been live streaming some of my trips with my Motorola Droid on Qik but, seeing your vids I purchased an Olympus WP digital cam. Hopefully I can share some quality vids soon from a mount vs fighting fish with one hand and the other hand holding the cam.

Re:New Website Design and New Additions to YakHawa
May 29 2010 09:15:43 Ram ball mounts and arms work great as well as the Xshot 2.0 and the kayak mount. The ram ball allows the bending and rotation of the camera. I am lucky as I mount it on my ama arms allowing me to grip my rod with my left and re position the base of the ram mount with my right. But always focus on bringing in the fish first and not worry about the camera so much and within time, you'll manage all. Look for a video on my setup in the next week or so when I get out there next time and I will showcase everything that I am using. Might be overkill, but it's what I like! Thanks for the post!

No Secrets Here... Learn How YakHawaii Makes His Trolling Rig
Want to Catch a Toothy Critter?
With the weather being so crazy these last four weeks and lack of new video footage of catches, I put together this short video on how I rig my hooks for catching mahi, ono and shibi. There will probably be some critics who will say that I don't know what I am doing. But you have to ask yourself the question... "Am I catching pelagic fish here in Hawaii?" If you answered "yes" to this question, there is probably no need to watch the video unless you are curious on what I do. No secrets here! Do what is working for you. Hey maybe make a video and upload it to YouTube and I will post an article for you on YakHawaii. The more information to help those who seek more knowledge on Hawaii kayak fishing, the better! But if you answered "no" to the question, watch the video. Pick up a tip or two. I have adapted what was taught to me by one of the best kayak anglers on the Big Island of Hawaii and his name is Reggie Pare'.
Better yet, order a 75 minute DVD video of big game yak fishing tips titled, "Kayak Fishing - Hawaii" made by Reggie as he guides you to his past successes. This video will get you started with great fishing tips and thrill you with exciting big game catches. In one of his chapters, he comes up too close for comfort with a whale shark. Visit his website at http://web.me.com/kpare/Kayak_Fishing/Kayak_Fishing_DVD.html. Reggie does not know I am plugging him, but he is one quality kayak fishing buddy. And after watching his video, you will know Reggie better and it will help you understand Kayak Fishing in Hawaii. This morning, we fished together and every time we go out on the hunt, it's so much fun, even if we don't hook up!
Well anyways, I hope you enjoy my video and if you have the time and want to fish the Big Island with me, let me know! Maybe we can make this happen.

Re:No Secrets Here... Learn How YakHawaii Makes Hi
Apr 16 2010 01:45:59 Here are pictures of the rig. The floss on the double hook is used to close the eye on the double hook. By using dental floss or waxed string, just wrap to close the eye so the wire leader (80lb. Malin Wire) does not slip off the hook. I sometimes call it piano wire. You would be surprised how many fish I lost before I figured this one out!

Re:No Secrets Here... Learn How YakHawaii Makes Hi
May 27 2010 06:56:37 I copied your rig and gave it a try on Tuesday- I guess I did it right, as I had a 4-5 ft ono up to the boat before he shook the hook. I was boosting him hard the whole time, as the conditions had turned nasty and needed to get out of there. The only thing I did differently on my rig was use the little cut-off wires from the haywire twists to wrap around the double hook shank instead of twine or floss. Seems to be quite secure.
Oh- and just stuffed a 3/8 oz weight in the opelu's mouth. Everybody was sold out of one ounce egg sinkers in Hilo, so I couldn't mash on on the hook. I think that's great idea though. |

Re:No Secrets Here... Learn How YakHawaii Makes His Trolling Rig
May 28 2010 23:36:31 I like the no secret format plus how-to-s are always going to get tweaked and today's no fish activity will be tomorrow's hotspot. In the kayak fishing community the opportunity to land on a pile of fish and "get all you can get" is limited to space and stamina not cooler space and petro. To rig up paddle out, hook one up, bring home one good fish and tell a good story is what the trip and planning is all about. To share knowledge, partner up, and share the experience is in my opinion what's all about. DriftingSon the other day it felt as if I was sharing your hookup and fight with the fish; so matter that I never even get a strike.

Re:No Secrets Here... Learn How YakHawaii Makes Hi
May 29 2010 04:11:01 After missing two strikes today- I think my stinger leader is too long. I was having to bend the wire a tad to get the double hook in the right spot. Anyone ever tried a double stinger- one on each side of the opelu?

Re:No Secrets Here... Learn How YakHawaii Makes Hi
May 29 2010 08:56:37 I have been adjusting my stinger as well. In fact when I went out 2 days ago, I added a single hook to the tail section since the strikes were coming from the back side. Once I made the adjustment, I did not have any action. Maybe in the next 2 or 3 weeks, I can make the drive out to the east side and fish with you. I really like the way you write and if you would like to write an article for yakhawaii, just ask me and I will give you the access to do so. Keep up the good work and I really like your boat you are making.

Re:No Secrets Here... Learn How YakHawaii Makes Hi
May 29 2010 09:16:00 I think I'm going to try a double hook on each side, with shorter leader. Hopefully the hooks just sort of look more like fins sticking out to the fish.
Thanks for the kind words- I'd be interested in writing something for the site, for sure. Just need to find a topic. I'd like to fish over there with you too- we go to Ke`ei a few times a year with friends who have a house there, and maybe we'll get a chance soon now that school is out. That would be a great spot to go out (another great launch spot, Pueo). |

Re:No Secrets Here... Learn How YakHawaii Makes Hi
May 29 2010 09:35:31 I was also thinking of adding a separate "J" hook made from stainless steel and wrap to the double hook so it creates a treble hook and have the double hooks stick out instead on in the flesh. I have been having a tough time landing fish these last 2 months, So now I am trolling 2 lines and keeping one the same and experimenting with the other. I have to break out of my slump sometime here.

Re:No Secrets Here... Learn How YakHawaii Makes Hi
May 29 2010 18:48:35 Aloha Paul and Fellow Kayak Anglers,
I have used Paul and Reggie rig and it has worked well for me. I have also modified it by adding another hook with a zip tie which turns the trailer hook into a triple hook. It worked fine but it seemed to keep the hook further away from the body of the fish. I plan on going out over this 3 day weekend so I have altered my rigs again so that the trailer hook is actually two double hooks back to back with a small zip tie. It seems to attatch to body of the fish better and keeps the exposed hooks much closer to the body of the bait fish that I'm trolling with. Recently I caught about a 7' shark which i released but it has proven to me that my rods, reels and rigs are strong enough to help me catch some of the bigger game. Hopefully I can post some pictures after the weekend of some fish and my revised version of my rigs. Take care and good luck fishing to all Maui Mark |

May 29 2010 19:34:01 Great Mark! I look forward to see all photos of a revised rig. I am always looking for ways of improvement. Hook placement is really a key to landing the fish. Forgot what it is like! Tight Lines!

Re:No Secrets Here... Learn How YakHawaii Makes Hi
Jun 02 2010 22:20:01 Quick update
I did not land any fish with my revised rig but I did get several big time hook ups. One hook up was in front of Mala Harbor here on Maui. Talk about the Hawaiian Sleigh Ride this monster fish pulled me approximately 3/4 of the way to the Island of Lanai about 45 minutes. I pulled my rudder up because I almost hulied and forced my rod to face the front and the ride was on:) Unfortunately whatever it was eventually broke my 100# braided line which was connected to a 200# three and half foot long SS braided leader. Boy Howdy I sure love this sport even when you miss em! Take Care Maui Mark |

Re:No Secrets Here... Learn How YakHawaii Makes Hi
Jun 03 2010 00:10:55 I heard the navy was testing their mini subs in Maui at about the time you were fishing and at the same location. Maybe you hooked onto one of those! Just kidding. Sounds big to me. The first time I had that sensation and power on the other end of the line, I cut the line and took my loses w/o second thoughts. Be safe!

Jun 17 2010 16:13:57 Got a cool rig that seems to be working well. I just need to carve out some time to take pictures and post. Any free time is currently spent fishing so I need to make myself spend some time doing some maintenance, cleaning and forum catch up.

Kayak Fishing Safety Preparation
To Prevent a Tragedy, You MUST Prepare and Think Safety First

Not to be scary about the news, but it seems that every month we read about someone here in Hawaii that becomes a casualty of the ocean. The photograph above is a photo taken of a rescue last week on March 12, 2010 on the Big Island in Puako in which a man lost his life while kayaking. From what I heard, there could have been preventive measures that would have prevented this from happening. It's not just kayak fishing, it could be regular kayaking, boating, surfing, wind-surfing, stand-up paddle boards, snorkeling and the list goes on. These outdoor sports here in Hawaii have the potential to claim your life if you are not prepared. Today I want to share with you my preparation for kayak fishing safety to help make sure that I come home to my wife and two children.
When I started out kayak fishing over four years ago, safety was always my main concern, but I did not practice it like I do now. For example, I did not wear my PFD life vest all the time storing it in my front hatch or in the tank well behind the seat. I would go out fishing alone taking the risk of not really knowing my surroundings like I should have known. I did not have a plan on where to ditch if the weather changed on me. I chose bad days to kayak fish without knowing what I was up against, especially with the strong trade winds and high surf on the Big Island. I also did not test my hull for leaks or holes especially after launching from a rocky area.
Three years ago I fished Mahukona by myself. This is probably one of the most dangerous areas to fish because of the strong trade winds that come off the Kohala mountain. I was 30 minutes into my journey when all of a sudden, you could see the white caps coming at me from the north and rain clouds coming over the mountain. Only 3/4 mile offshore, I paddled hard into the wind losing my hat and Maui Jim sunglasses. I cut my line and pounded it out for forty five minutes only to enter the bay like a sail and almost being pushed over. I did have a VHF radio and thought of just giving up and calling for help, but I knew I was strong enough to give it a last effort. I knew that I was not going to make it in where I launched and chose Kapa'a two miles north of Mahukona as where I would ditch my kayak and get off the water. I chose a 45 degree angle and battled for another 45 minute and made it into the bay fully exhausted with my legs shivering from being scared to death. I never before considered an exit strategy when going out on the water. When I made it to the rocks, I pulled my kayak onto the rocks and went and sat down on the bench for 20 minutes to regain my composure. I hitched a ride with some tourist back to my car and did not go back on the water for another month. Talk about being tired from paddling.
When my older brother Jerry was visiting the Big Island several months later, I went out with him and his son Brandon to Keauhou. We were two miles out just getting ready to put our lines out when I notice the shifting of my weight almost caused me to roll my kayak. I looked in the hatch and noticed that my hull was 2/3 full of water. I had no bilge pump or sponge to bail water. I tethered my kayak to my brothers kayak who was on a Ocean Kayak Malibu 2XL that could carry a payload of 550 pounds and towed my kayak back in. Talk about an uncomfortable ride back in without a seat and 600 pounds on the kayak. It turns out that I had a crack in the seam of the scupper hole that filled my kayak full of water. The reason I now check for leaks filling up my kayak with water every so often after a day out in the water.
Yet another encounter I had was being side swiped by a 13 foot tiger shark as it trailed my bait as I was bringing it in to check on it. Thus the reason for me getting amas (outriggers) on my kayak and a Shark Shield. I don't ever want a tiger shark creeping up like JAWS that is wider and longer than a kayak coming up on the side of me ever again without having kayak stabilization and deterrence to keep away.
