Apr 10 2010 18:56:37 I live on Maui but I must say that when I visited the Plenty Pupule Kona store I was really impressed with their store and the kind service. Well stocked and nice people.
Look forward to seeing the results of the contest. Take Care Maui Mark |

Re:The Yak-Attack Kayak Fishing Tournament
Apr 11 2010 00:37:26 Should be a great tournament. To bad that they don't make it from one launch destination instead of all over the Big Island. It would really be a great test of skill and a proving ground if everyone launched and returned to the same destination. The impact of all the kayakers in one location would be eventful. There would be no advantages of favorite fishing holes for the local kayak fisherman. It would make one great picture and video coverage and show strength in the kayak fishing community. What a way of sharing our passion with the sport of competition. That's what I would like to see. It would probably look like this... photo taken from yakass.net... thanks Josh!
You would get better sponsorship and one great party when it was all over. Anyone else have thoughts on this? |

Bottom Fish Kahala (Amberjack)
Five Miles of Trolling With No Action, Moved to the Bottom
Hit the water this morning with my fishing buddy Chris Finch and his friend Ryan. Chris has not been on the water since last September, so this was a special day for me. We both started kayak fishing together in 2006 and it brought back some good times as I saw him stretch his wings with the paddle and rod. Unfortunately, the top surface action of trolling did not provide us with the results we wanted. So we chose the alternative, the bottom.
Dropping down to 420 feet, my rod bent down and I had a hook-up. It felt big at first with the initial fight it gave me, but the fish succumbed and rose to the surface quite easily. Moving my video cameras into place, I was able to get some decent shots of the Amberkack known as a "kahala" in the Hawaiian language.

Oh... No Bites Today?
They Said That No One is Hooking Up on the Big Island!
Got a voice message from one of my fishing buddies yesterday at 2 pm. The message said that he was at the local KTA grocery store in Keauhou and ran into a yak angler who just got off the water around 11 am. The angler said that nothing was happening in Keauhou including boats and the bite wasn't on. I was planning on fishing this week with him as long as the weather permitted (wind) and if his schedule becoming free from work. He pretty much told me that he was going to pass on fishing until next week since the bite was not on and there was no bait or good supply of fish at the KTA store in Keauhou. So I called him after listening to the message with him not knowing that I just got off the water in Keauhou with different results. I shared with him that the fish gods were on my side and that I was lucky enough to land a 38 pound ono within 30 minutes of dropping my bait. We kind of laughed and made the comment, "if you are not out on the water, you'll never catch... that's why they call it fishing."
It was a beautiful day in Keauhou Bay. Arrived at the launch site at 6:45 am to be greeted by a friend and his wife (Chris & Lori Monson) visiting from Alaska. Borrowed an extra kayak from one my good friends on the island and provided a basic kayak fishing setup for Chris. We rigged our yaks for departure and got into the water at 7:30 am. Headed southwest in an angle of the Sheraton hotel and proceeded to the my usual drop off at 200 feet. Casting my line over the side at a trolling distance of 200 feet marked-off by my dental floss marker on my 40 pound monofilament line. Not more than seven minutes into the pedal, my rod bent backwards and my reel started to scream.

Apr 08 2010 21:51:47 Aloha Paul,
Nice video on the Ono and congratulations! It appears that you have recently gone from spinning reels to conventional type reels. Do you or Reggie have a favorite rod and reel combination? Thanks again for sharing. You make all kayak fisherman wiser and poud:) Take Care MM |

Kayak Fishing Magazine - Issue 28
Mark Joslin (Maui Mark) is the "Angler of the Month" for KFM
The latest issue of Kayak Fishing Magazine is now online for viewing. Registration is required to subscribe to KFM. This month they feature Maui Mark, one our members as their "Angler of the Month" and provide other offerings in their magazine. Included in this issue is an interview with Jason Stock, plus an article on "How to Organize a Kayak Fishing Event." I enjoyed the article "Take Better Kayak Fishing Pictures" and their reviews on kayaks and other products.
Take a peek and read about Maui Mark by visiting Kayak Fishing Magazine.

Re:Kayak Fishing Magazine - Issue 28
Apr 11 2010 18:24:43 I started getting some global attention after I was featured on the December 2009 cover of the state wide publication Hawaii Fishing News.
I had never been to kayak fishing sites and forums but eventually started visiting them and joining the sites. Started introducing myself and making friends. Jon shields was one of them. Jon recently self published a book called Kayak Fishing and also decided to do an article about me on the KFM site. Kayak fishing has become an ultimate sport for me. I really enjoy meeting fellow kayak fishing anglers and sharing all of the experiences and knowledge with one another. For this reason I'm a huge fan of YakHawaii and Paul. Thanks for sharing Paul and for your continued efforts to promote this awesome sport in the most positive fashion. Sincerely Maui Mark |

Apr 17 2010 17:02:59 MM,
Congrats on getting some media. Glad the kayak fishing movement is growing. I think it's because of the internet and folks like Paul and Issac for promoting good methods and philosophies. My kayak fishing days go back over 10 years but it just didn't change or develop into what it is currently until recently over the past few years. Kayak fishing is now #1 on my vices list. Keep on boosting them in and look forward to more articles to come. c2y |

Apr 17 2010 17:34:09 Aloha c2y,
I have not been kayak fishing as long as you. I wish I would of discovered how much fun kayak fishing was 10 years ago:) I started getting serious around April of 2009 but since then I have been obsessed with the sport of kayak fishing. Paul has become a good friend to me and has helped me in many ways to enhance my kayak fishing skills. I reeealy enjoy this site and look forward to reading some of the future c2y articles:) I'm a proud Grandpa of a future kayak fishing boy that is 19 months old. His mommy (My Daughter)is having her baby shower this morning at our house because she is due this month on the 30th of April. She is expecting a baby boy so now I will have two future kayak fishing buddy's. I'm hoping my wife will suggest that I go fishing. Hopefully I will be posting some fish pics later this weekend. Re:Kayak Fishing Magazine - Issue 28
Apr 18 2010 01:33:54 MM,
Grandpa! Congrats again for finding a few more "fishing" buddies. YH, Despite being on a kayak over 10 years back, it was still more of opportunity than dedicating the entire day to kayak fishing. I'm still considered a newbie when it comes to kayak fishing. Especially on the BI where the waters are new to me. But I'm thankful some old methods are still good on the BI and there's a new found community sharing the same interests. c2y |
